BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Men's and Women's Tennis teams came away with big wins over Meridian College (Miss.) on Tuesday afternoon, March 18, defeating the Eagles at home in Bay Minette, Ala.
The 15th-ranked men's team at Coastal South managed a close win over MCC, defeating No. 20 Meridian 5-4 to improve to 12-6 on the year. Meanwhile, the women's team at Coastal South, who ranks No. 14 in the NJCAA, came away with a 6-3 victory over the 18th-ranked Eagles. The win improves the overall record to 10-7 for the women's team at Coastal South.
Men's Recap & Highlights
In the men's match, Coastal South kicked off the day by winning two of the three doubles matches played. Enzo Loots and Lucas Van Splunteren earned an 8-2 win from No. 2 doubles, while David Gimenez and Alvaro Velasco grabbed an 8-0 shutout from the third-seeded doubles match. From No. 1 doubles, Meridian's Simon Ojeda and Daniel Espin picked up an 8-6 victory for the Eagles' lone doubles point. Ojeda and Espin then continued their strong day with wins from the top two flights in singles play.
Coastal South's bottom three players in the singles lineup managed wins over Meridian, securing the overall match victory for the Coyotes. David Gimenez won 6-0, 6-1 from No. 4 singles, followed by Alvaro Velasco from the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Finally, Nils Guyot picked up a perfect 6-0, 6-0 shutout to help Coastal South clinch the ranked win.
Women's Recap & Highlights
Similar to the men's match, Coastal South Women's Tennis grabbed two wins in three matches of doubles play, with the top-seeded pair of Emily Grubach and Jescimiel Mabiongo securing an 8-4 win in the process. The Coyotes' other doubles point came from the third flight where Samantha Parris and Sadie Anthony also came away with an 8-4 win.
In singles action, the Coyotes won from No. 1, 3, 4, and 5 singles, with Grubach collecting a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 comeback win from the top flight in the lineup. Anna Beth Hill cruised to a 6-4, 7-6 win from No. 3 singles, while Julianne Legg managed a 6-2, 6-4 win from the fourth-seeded singles match. In the fifth-seeded match, Halee Harper battled in a thriller. Harper rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7) win to secure Coastal South's six point in the win.
The Meridian Eagles only took victories from No. 2 doubles, while winning from No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
Big Weekend Ahead
Both tennis teams at Coastal Alabama South are set for matches across Friday and Saturday, March 21-22, with Saturday's matches against Wallace State - Hanceville being two of the biggest matches of the season. Saturday's matches will be played at Lott Park in Daphne, Ala., featuring No. 15 Coastal South v. No. 5 Wallace State - Hanceville on the men's side and No. 17 Coastal South and No. 14 Wallace State - Hanceville on the women's side.
Prior to Saturday's ranked matchups, the Coyotes will host Bevill State (Ala.) in Bay Minette, Ala. on Friday. Action on both days are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. CT.
