Coastal South Tennis Teams Go 1-1 in Ranked Matches Over the Weekend

NJCAA Top 25 Battles Over the Weekend See Coyotes Split Matches

BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Men's and Women's Tennis teams hosted a pair of ranked conference opponents on March 21-22, with both teams finishing 1-1 on the weekend. The Coyotes opened the weekend with victories over Bevill State (Ala.), but fell to Wallace State - Hanceville to wrap up the weekend action in downtown Bay Minette, Ala.

Women's Results

In the Friday win over Bevill State, the 17th-ranked Coyotes defeated No. 25 Bevill State in dominating fashion, shutting out the Bears, 9-0. Emily Grubach and Jescimiel Mabiango won from the top-seeded doubles match 8-5, while Kameryn Browne and Julianne Legg came away with an 8-3 victory from No. 2 doubles. In the third-seeded doubles matchup, Sadie Anthony and Samantha Parris won 8-6 to secure the doubles sweep for Coastal South.

Coastal South built off the strong doubles performance in singles play, winning all six singles matches to secure the shutout. Julianne Legg highlighted the singles results with a 6-0, 6-0 win from No. 3 singles, while Emily Grubach won 6-1, 6-1 as the No. 1 seed.

The following day, the Coyotes faced No. 14 Wallace State - Hanceville and fell, 6-3. Sadie Anthony and Samantha Parris secured Coastal South's lone doubles victory with an 8-5 win from No. 3 doubles, but the Coyotes saw the Lions come away with wins from the top two doubles flights. 

In singles action, Coastal South saw wins from the bottom of the lineup as Halee Harper won 6-2, 6-0 from No. 5 singles and Kameryn Browne earned a 6-2, 6-2 win from the sixth-seeded singles matchup. Wallace - Hanceville recorded two-set wins in each of the top four singles matches in the lineup.

Coastal South Women's Tennis' overall record moves to 11-8 on the season and 7-2 in conference play following the two ranked matches during the weekend.

Men's Results

Similar to the women's match, the men's team at Coastal South swept Bevill State 9-0 on Friday afternoon. Blake Robertson and Ryan Roberson earned an 8-3 win as the top seed in doubles play, followed by a close 9-7 victory from Enzo Loots and Lucas Van Splunteren as the No. 2 seed. In the third-seeded doubles match, Alvaro Velasco and David Gimenez secured an 8-4 win.

In singles play against the Bears, Coastal South won each singles match, with all but one going just two sets. The lone three-set match came from No. 2 singles where Julien Cordeau captured a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory. From No. 6 singles, Ryan Roberson dominated 6-0, 6-2, while Blake Robertson collected a 6-1, 7-5 victory from the top-seeded singles match.

Against No. 5 Wallace State - Hanceville, the Coyotes fell 8-1 to the Lions. Wallace - Hanceville won each doubles match over Coastal South, but had to battle in singles action. Despite losses, Julien Cordeau and Lucas Van Splunteren forced three sets against their opponents, while Alvaro Velsaco helped the Coyotes avoid the shutout with a three-set win from No. 4 singles. Velsaco won the final two sets to earn the win, 5-7, 7-5, 5-5 after his opponent retired early.
