Coastal South Men's & Women's Tennis Finishes Weekend 1-1 Against Ranked Opponents

Coyotes Face Two Ranked Opponents Over the Weekend

BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Men's and Women's Tennis teams both put together a 1-1 weekend against ranked opponents, wrapping up action with wins over Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. on April 5. The Coyotes began the weekend with matches against Jones College (Miss.) on the road, with the men's team falling 5-4 to No. 14 Jones and the women's team dropping a 9-0 match to the 10th-ranked team in the NJCAA. The next day, both teams at Coastal South bounced back and won 6-3 against Copiah-Lincoln on a neutral court, with the Wolves ranking No. 19 on the men's side and No. 20 in the women's rankings.

No. 15 Coastal South Men's Tennis is now 14-12 overall on the season, while No. 17 Coastal South Women's Tennis is 12-13.

Men's Highlights

In the 5-4 loss to Jones, Coastal South saw wins from one doubles match and three singles matches. Nils Guyot and Julien Cordeau came away with the lone doubles victory from the third-seeded doubles matchup, while Alvaro Velasco claimed a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (7) win from No. 3 singles. Ryan Roberson also earned a three-set win in singles play, winning 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) from No. 5 singles. David Gimenez was the lone Coyote to win in two sets, dominating in his singles win from No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Jones College claimed two-set wins in all three singles matches won against the Yotes.

The next day, the Coyotes corralled a 6-3 victory in Mobile, Ala., winning two doubles matches and four singles matches over Copiah-Lincoln. The pairs of Enzo Loots and Lucas Van Splunteren and David Gimenez and Alvaro Velasco earned wins from No. 2 and 3 doubles, while Velsaco continued his winning ways on the weekend with a 6-2, 6-0 victory from No. 3 singles. Ryan Roberson also won his second-straight singles match on the week from the fourth flight, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 win.

From No. 5 singles, Lucas Van Splunteren won 6-1, 6-4, while Alvaro Bardales earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory from the sixth-seeded singles match. Copiah-Lincoln earned wins from the top-seeded doubles match and top two seeds in singles play. 

Women's Highlights

In the women's matchup, the Coyotes dropped a 9-0 match to Jones College before bouncing back with a 6-3 win over Copiah-Lincoln on Saturday. Against Jones, the Coyotes were swept in two sets across each singles matchup. 

In the 6-3 win over Copiah-Lincoln, the Yotes won two of the three doubles matches and four singles matches. Julianne Legg and Kameryn Browne won 8-5 from No. 2 doubles, while Samantha Parris and Sadie Anthony managed an 8-1 win from the third-seeded doubles match.

In singles play, Jescimiel Mabiongo earned a 6-4, 7-5 win from the second flight, followed by a 7-5, 6-2 win from Anna Beth Hill in the third-seeded match. Julianne Legg matched her doubles win with a win from No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2, and Kameryn Browne won 6-4, 6-2 from No. 6 singles. 

Monday Action on the Road

After a Monday morning postponement due to weather, both teams are now scheduled to return to the court on Monday afternoon, April 7 with non-conference matches against Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. in Perkinston, Miss. Monday's matches are scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. CT.
