Will Hess enters his third season on staff as the Assistant Softball Coach at Coastal Alabama CC. A native of Semmes, Ala., Coach Hess attended, then named Faulkner State CC, where he spent two years on staff as the softball student manager and team statistician. From there, he was awarded the opportunity to continue his education while continuing to work with the Southeastern Louisiana University softball team. It was during this time under great leadership that he accredits for developing his love for coaching and his passion for serving others.Â
After graduation from SLU, Coach Hess was honored with his first coaching job - being selected a head coach in the American Softball Association (ASBA), a semi-professional summer league located in Mobile, Ala. He finished the summer with a 32-8 record winning the 2019 ASBA Championship and having 11 of his 14 total athletes honored with post-season accolades. From there, Coach Hess accepted a job at Dyersburg State Community College in Tennessee in the fall of 2019. He spent two seasons with the Eagles, one full season of competition due to the pandemic, where he helped coach the TCCAA West Division Pitcher of the Year and a 4th place finish overall. In 2021, he accepted a position as the Assistant Coach at Webber International University (NAIA) in Babson Park, Fla. In just one season with the Warriors, they finished Sun Conference Tournament Champions and went on to win the Hattiesburg Regional advancing to the NAIA World Series for only the third time in school history. Coach Hess assisted with the pitching staff that was ranked top 2 in the nation for earned run average in the NAIA and had one player selected the Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year and a 1st Team All-American. Due to the success of the entire coaching staff, they moved to Carrolton, Georgia where they took over the staff at NCAA Division II University of West Georgia in the fall of 2022. Despite enjoying his time at UWG as a graduate assistant, he returned home to Bay Minette as the assistant coach to compete in the spring of 2023.Â
In his first season back in Bay Minette and the last season as Sun Chiefs, the team finished 2nd at the ACCC Tournament earning the school's first ever bid to the NJCAA District Championship. In two seasons, he has since assisted in coaching 10+ Player of the Week honors, 8 Pitcher of the Week honors, 9 All-ACCC selections, and one ACCC Player of the Year.Â
In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Hess works as an Athletic Specialist where he handles the social media efforts for all the Coastal Alabama Community College Athletic sites, among other various responsibilities. He received his Associate's degree in Mathematics from Faulkner State CC in 2015, his Bachelor's in Applied Behavioral Sciences from Southeastern Louisiana in 2019, and his Master's in Sports Management with a focus on Statistical Analysis from the University of West Georgia in May of 2024.
