Coyotes Split High-Scoring Doubleheader On the Road Over the Weekend

Coastal South Baseball Bounces Back in Game Two to Force Weekend Split with Calhoun

TANNER, Ala. - Coastal Alabama South Baseball managed a doubleheader split on the road over the weekend, dropping a high-scoring game one to Calhoun C.C. (Ala.) on Saturday afternoon, April 5, while earning an extra-inning 8-7 victory in the nightcap to conclude the four-game weekend series. The two teams opened the series back on Thursday, April 3, which saw the Coyotes sweep the Warhawks in both games at home in Bay Minette, Ala.

Following Saturday's split, Coastal South improves to 19-17 overall on the year and 15-5 in the conference after claiming the series win over Calhoun.

Saturday Notables

The Coyotes fell 20-12 in a seven-inning game to begin action on Saturday afternoon, with Calhoun out-hitting Coastal South, 17-7. Calhoun relied on a massive 16-run fifth inning the put the game away, despite Coastal South scoring 11 runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Seth Payne led the Yotes with three RBIs in the loss, followed by Adison Scott and Quincy Walters with two RBIs a piece. Prior to the big fifth inning for Calhoun, Spencer Nicholas was rolling on the mound for the Coyotes with four scoreless innings to start the game. Overall, all 20 runs the Warhawks scored went down as earned runs against the Coastal South pitching staff.

In game two later on Saturday evening, Coastal South bounced back and scored an 8-7 victory in extras. Both teams scored two runs each in the first inning, with Calhoun taking a 4-3 lead after two. Fast forward to the sixth inning where Coastal South trailed 5-3, the Coyotes pushed across three runs in the frame to grab the lead, 6-5. However, Calhoun immediately reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the sixth after scoring two runs.

Leading 7-6, the Warhawks allowed the Yotes to tie the game in the top of the eighth, with Coastal South eventually forcing extra innings. In extras, the Coyotes grabbed the lead in the top of the 10th frame after a steal of home and held the Warhawks off the scoreboard in the bottom half to earn the win.

Derek Jelen finished 2-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored in game two on Saturday, while Kennedy Leggett cranked a solo home run during a 1-for-5 performance. Devon Murphy came away with two hits in five at-bats, while crossing home plate three times. Murphy was responsible for the steal of home in extra innings to earn Coastal South the win.

On the mound, Trevor Ferris picked up the win after tossing 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings to close out the game. Ferris struck out two and retired all eight batters he faced.
