Coastal South Baseball Manages Conference Split with Shelton State in Battle for First Place

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In a battle between the first and second place teams in the current ACCC D-I Baseball standings, Coastal Alabama South and Shelton State C.C. (Ala.) worked a split across two games played on Thursday, April 10. Coastal South used a game one comeback to secure a 6-4 victory to begin Thursday's action, while falling 14-4 to the Bucs in game two. The split keeps the Coyotes ahead of Shelton State by one game in the standings as Coastal South improves to 20-18 overall on the year and 16-6 in the conference. Meanwhile, Shelton State is 15-7 in the ACCC.

Both teams are scheduled to meet again for an additional doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, April 12 in Bay Minette, Ala. Saturday's DH is set to start at 12:00 p.m. CT.

Yotes, Bucs Battle for Top Spot

In Thursday's first game, Shelton State took a 4-2 advantage through five innings of a scheduled seven-inning ballgame in Tuscaloosa, but Coastal South sparked a rally in the top of the sixth that gave the Coyotes the lead late. Coastal South pushed across four runs in the sixth to grab a 6-4 lead over the Bucs, with a two-run double by Devon Murphy highlighting the inning. Eventually, the score held up in favor of the Coyotes and Coastal South picked up a huge comeback win.

Coastal South out-hit the Bucs 7-5 in game one, led by Devon Murphy with three hits and three RBIs. Murphy added two runs scored and finished just a single shy of the cycle as he tallied nine bases in the win. He became the only Coyote to put together a multi-hit effort in game one.

Silas Cunningham and Aaron Threat joined Murphy with an RBI each in the win, while Talan Tourelle earned the win on the mound with five innings of work. Tourelle allowed four runs to score, two earned, and struck out five. Reigning ACCC D-I Baseball Pitcher of the Week Trevor Ferris closed out the game and picked up a two-inning save, allowing just one hit and no runs.

In the nightcap, the Bucs rolled offensively with 14 runs off 14 hits. The game was called early due to the NJCAA run rule after Shelton State pushed across five runs alone in the bottom of the sixth inning. Coastal South held firm with Shelton State until the Bucs scored nine of their 14 runs across the fifth and sixth frames.

Despite just four runs, the Coyotes notched 10 hits in the losing effort. Devon Murphy, Quincy Walters, and Kennedy Leggett all collected two hits each, with Leggett leading the team with three RBIs. Leggett drove in two in the first inning off a double, while connecting on a solo home run later in the game. Walters came away with Coastal South's other RBI following a triple in the fourth inning.

On the mound, Coastal South was forced to use four arms. Each pitcher gave up at least one hit and one earned run to Shelton State's offense, combining for five walks and just two strikeouts.
