ENTERPRISE, Ala. – Coastal Alabama - South Women's Volleyball picked up a sweep over Bevill State (Ala.) and a thrilling five-set win over Northeast Mississippi, but dropped matches to Meridian Community College (Miss.) and Pearl River Community College (Miss.) in a busy two-day stretch of play across Sept. 5-6. The four-match tournament was held in Enterprise, Ala. and was hosted by Lurleen B. Wallace Community College (Ala.). The overall record moves to 4-9 on the season for the Coyotes following this weekend's results.
Weekend Recap
The Coyotes opened Friday morning against Meridian, falling in straight sets (19-25, 26-28, 17-25). Freshman setter Anna Musgrove paced the offense with 21 assists, 10 digs, and a service ace, while Anique Self led the attack with nine kills on a .211 hitting percentage. Sophie Sanchez anchored the defense with 20 digs in the defeat. Coastal - South struggled with consistent offense and finished with a -.010 hitting line against the Eagles.
The Yotes responded in its second match on Friday with a strong 3-0 sweep over ACCC foe Bevill State (25-20, 25-19, 25-19). The Coyotes hit much better in the second matchup of the day, finishing with a .271 hitting percentage as a team. Anique Self once again led the attack with 13 kills, picking up a double-double with 12 digs. She was followed by Ella Kyker with nine kills. Wendy Reyes Duenas added a season-high seven kills, while Anna Musgrove came away with 16 assists to orchestrate the attack, firing six service aces in the process. Meanwhile, Mariah Mayes led the defense with 14 digs, adding five kills, and Sophie Sanchez recorded 13 digs.
After the 1-1 start the the LBW Tournament, Coastal - South returned to the court on Saturday morning against Northeast Mississippi. The Yotes won in five sets against the Tigers, taking the first two sets 25-20 and 25-16 before Northeast Mississippi managed 25-23 and 25-20 victories across the third and fourth sets. In the deciding fifth set, Coastal - South took the match with a 15-5 set win. Mariah Mayes produced 14 kills and 13 digs in the five-set winner, with Ella Kyker coming away with 12 kills. The defense was strong for the Coyotes on Saturday morning as five players finished with double-digit digs totals. Sophie Sanchez led the defense with 21 digs, most of the season so far for the Yotes' libero, while Harper Cooley notched a season-high 17 digs in just her fifth match played this year. Anique Self and Anna Musgrove both recorded 12 digs each. Musgrove went on to lead the team with a season-high 30 assists, followed by Kameryn Browne with 19.
To wrap up the tournament later on Saturday, Coastal - South ended the weekend against Pearl River and came up short in a 0-3 decision (26-28, 18-25, 13-25). Ella Kyker led offensively with seven kills, and Mariah Mayes chipped in five kills and 14 digs. Anna Musgrove finished with 13 assists, while Anique Self tallied 12 digs.
Back Home on Wednesday
The Yotes return to Jack Robertson Arena on the Bay Minette campus on Wednesday, Sept. 10, scheduled to host John Melvin University (Fla.) at 6:00 p.m. CT.
