JACK ROBERTSON ARENA | BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Behind a season-high 37 points from sophomore guard Josh Williams, Coastal Alabama - South Men's Basketball battled but ultimately fell 109-96 to Southern Union State (Ala.) in ACCC Division I action Monday night, Feb. 2 inside Jack Robertson Arena.
Williams continued his standout campaign with one of his best performances of the season, finishing 11-of-18 from the field, 3-of-7 from three-point range and 12-of-16 at the free throw line in 35 minutes of action. The 37-point outing marked a new season high for Williams, who leads the ACCC Division I with a 22.1 points-per-game average.
The Coyotes carried a 44-42 lead into halftime after a competitive opening 20 minutes, but Southern Union surged in the second half, scoring 67 points to pull away for the 13-point conference victory.
Coastal - South shot an even 50% (36-of-72) from the field for the game and knocked down eight three-pointers. However, the 'Yotes were limited to 29.6% from beyond the arc and 53.3% at the free throw line, while committing 15 turnovers. Southern Union capitalized with efficient offense, shooting 53.3% from the floor and 40% from three-point range, and turned the ball over just five times.
Makhi Jones added a double-double for the Coyotes with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while AJ Thompson contributed 12 points and five boards. Tyler Rivers chipped in eight points and six rebounds in the effort. Meanwhile, Southern Union was led by Don Tinsley's 28 points, with Dash Thomas adding 19 and Isaiah Dennis finishing with 13.
Coastal Alabama - South will look to regroup as conference play continues in ACCC Division I action.
Headed to Tuscaloosa
Coastal - South travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. next on the schedule to face off with the conference's current top team in Shelton State (Ala.). Shelton State currently sits 3-2 in the ACCC this season and is 16-5 overall on the year. The 'Yotes will look to put an end to the Bucs' impressive run, with Thursday's game being set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
