Yotes Salvage Series Finale; Drop Three of Four Versus Chattahoochee Valley

Coastal Alabama - South Baseball Earns Split in Road Doubleheader to Open the Week

PHENIX CITY, Ala. - Coastal Alabama - South Baseball closed out an ACCC Division I series against Chattahoochee Valley Community College (Ala.) with a strong finish, earning a split in a road doubleheader to wrap up the four-game set across Apr. 2-6. The Coyotes dropped the first three contests to the Pirates before responding with a win in the finale to salvage the series and avoid the sweep.

Coastal - South now stands at 14-24 overall and 6-14 in conference play, including a 4-12 mark at home in Bay Minette.

Series Notes

The series opened with a pair of seven-inning losses at home for the 'Yotes, as the Coyotes fell 8-3 in the opener and 16-7 in a shortened game two. After trading runs early on in game one, Chattahoochee Valley capitalized on a six-run seventh inning to earn the victory, carrying that momentum into game two where the Pirates managed 16 runs on 12 hits, scoring six runs alone in the fourth inning and five runs in seventh frame. Despite flashes of offensive output, the Coyotes were unable to keep pace with the Pirates' scoring surge across both games.

Tyler DelVecchio homered in the opener, while Kennedy Leggett and Seth Payne both doubled. The Coyotes did not record an extra-base hit in the nightcap, but were led by Derek Jelen and Brooks Womble who each finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Meanwhile, Payne picked up a pair of RBIs in game two.

Following a postponement due to weather, the series shifted to Phenix City, Ala. on Apr. 6. Game three followed a similar script, with Coastal dropping a 10-5 decision. The Coyotes showed improvement at the plate, stringing together nine hits to stay within striking distance, but Chattahoochee Valley again used a big scoring inning to pull away and secure the series victory.

Both Payne and Jelen added two more hits to their series totals, with Carson Carrera joining the duo with two hits of his own. Jelen led the team with two RBIs in the game three defeat. On the mound, Trevor Ferris tossed four scoreless innings from out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits and striking out six to keep the Coyotes alive.

Facing a potential sweep, Coastal - South responded in the series finale with its most complete performance of the weekend. The Coyotes earned a 7-1 victory in the finale, combining effective pitching with consistent offensive pressure. Coastal controlled the game from the outset, limiting scoring opportunities for the Pirates while producing runs on 12 total hits in the game.

Kennedy Leggett and Sean Greene both homered in the game four victory, while London Prashad doubled. Greene led the team with three RBIs off his three-run homer in the second inning that got the scoring spree started for the 'Yotes. Other offensive contributors included Derek Jelen (3-for-5, R) and Carson Carrera (2-for-3, 2 BB, R). Meanwhile, Spencer Nicholas was lights out on the bump as the southpaw managed 7.2 innings as the Coyotes' starter. Nicholas allowed only three hits, collecting five strikeouts and allowing six walks. Coleman Capaci finished the game with 1.1 hitless innings from out of the 'pen, striking out a pair.

The finale victory allowed the Coyotes to leave Phenix City with momentum heading into the next stretch of conference play scheduled to begin on Thursday, Apr. 9.

Opening Four-Game Set with Road Trip

Coastal Alabama - South Baseball hits the road next on the schedule and will look to build on the game four performance as the Coyotes continue ACCC action. The 'Yotes head to Birmingham, Ala. for a doubleheader against Lawson State (Ala.) on Thursday, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.

The series then shifts to Stanley James Field in Bay Minette, Ala. on Saturday, Apr. 11 with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. CT.
