NEWTON, Kan. - Freshman Shane Burns of the Coastal Alabama - South Men's Golf program, led by head coach Lee Huggins, wrapped up his 2025-26 campaign at the NJCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship Tournament this past week, competing against 120 of the nation's top golfers at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas, from May 12-15.
Representing the Coyotes on the national stage, Burns finished 87th overall after posting a four-round total of 334 (+46) on the par-72 course.
Burns opened the tournament with an 89 (+17) in the first round before improving with an 82 (+10) during round two. He followed with an 85 (+13) in the third round and closed the championship with his best performance of the week, carding a 78 (+6) in the final round. He tallied two birdies, one eagle, and 30 pars during the tournament, managing 13 pars alone in the final round.Â
A freshman from Daphne, Ala., Burns qualified individually for the national championship after earning a top-10 finish at the NJCAA Southeast District Championship in April in Montgomery, Alabama.
Competing in his first season with the Coyotes, Burns capped off a strong freshman campaign by advancing to the national tournament and gaining valuable experience against one of the toughest fields in junior college golf.
