PERKINSTON, Miss. - Coastal Alabama - South Women's Baskeball dropped just its second game of the season on Monday evening, Dec. 8, with both losses coming against Mississippi Gulf Coast in a home-and-home series. The Coyotes were unable to overcome a tough second quarter and ultimately fell 62-53 on the road in Perkinston, seeing the overall record fall to 6-2 on the season.

How It Happened

Coastal - South opened with a competitive first period, trailing just 18-15 to the Bulldogs, but Mississippi Gulf Coast used a 19-8 second-quarter surge to create separation in Monday's non-conference bout. Despite a stronger finish, including a 17-point fourth quarter, the 37-23 deficit at halftime proved too much to erase for the Yotes. 

Tyra Caves led the Coyotes with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while adding four rebounds and three steals. Shamiya Oliver provided a strong lift off the bench, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds, and Maya Griffin added eight points and was perfect from the free-throw line at 3-for-3. Kalaysia Robinson anchored the interior with a team-high 10 rebounds and six points, while both Shakira Williams and Laila Young notched four points each from off the bench. Coming off a career-high 31-point performance, Coastal - South's season leader in offense Brooklyn Phillips was defended well and managed just two points in the loss.

Coastal - South's offense struggled to find rhythm, shooting 27.6% from the field, making just two of nine three-point attempts. Meanwhile,cMississippi Gulf Coast controlled momentum through efficient scoring bursts in the first and second quarters before holding off Coastal's late push.

Back Home Versus the Northern Yotes

Coastal Alabama - South Women's Basketball returns to action early next week, looking to break back into the win column by hosting counterpart Coastal Alabama - North on Monday, Dec. 15 in a battle between the Coastal Coyotes. Monday's game is set for a 5:30 p.m. CT tip off inside Jack Robertson Arena and will aired live on JockJive.com.
