Box Score 4 HANCEVILLE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama - South Women's Volleyball team competed in a two-day tournament over the weekend in Hanceville, Ala., competing in four matches at the Wallace State Invitational. Coastal South opened action on Friday, Aug. 29 and fell in both matches played against Cleveland Community College (N.C.) and host-school Wallace State - Hanceville (Ala.). The following day, the Yotes grabbed their lone win of the weekend in straight-set fashion, sweeping Georgia Highlands College. However, Coastal South fell in four sets to Lawson State (Ala.) to conclude tournament action. The overall record on the year moves to 2-6 in eight matches played.
Weekend Highlights
In a four-set loss to Cleveland CC to begin the tournament, Coastal South managed a 26-24 set two win for the lone set victory of the match. Cleveland managed 25-20, 25-16, and 25-17 wins across sets one, three, and four to clinch the match victory. The Coyotes finished with 25 total kills and 24 attack errors in the loss, led offensively by Mariah Mayes with six kills. Kameryn Browne paced the team with 10 assists and Sophie Sanchez collected a team-high 17 digs across the four sets.
Following the match with Cleveland, Coastal South was then swept in straight sets by Wallace State - Hanceville. The Lions cruised to 25-14, 25-17, 25-7 set wins, holding the Yotes to a .021 hitting percentage with 20 kills. Mayes once again led the offense with six kills, while Maggie Shorter led the team with 10 assists. Browne followed with six. Defensively, Sanchez collected a team-high 10 digs, followed by Shorter with eight.Â
The next day, Coastal South came away with a big sweep over Georgia Highlands, improving each set played and winning 25-19, 25-17, 25-13. The offense recorded a strong 30 kills, committing just 15 attack errors in the process. Ella Kyker paced the offense with 11 kills on 31 total attempts, followed by Anique Self with seven kills on 17 attempts. Maggie Shorter (16) and Kameryn Browne (12) combined for 28 assists in the win, while Sophie Sanchez (14), Mariah Mayes (11), and Anique Self (11) all finished in double figures with defensive digs. At the net, Ella Kyker collected three blocks.
After the win over Georgia Highlands, the Yotes battled but came up short against Lawson State, suffering a four-set loss. Coastal South opened the match with a strong 25-15 set one win, but fell 16-25, 11-25, 21-25 in each of the next three sets. The Coyotes finished with a weekend-high 50 kills in the match against Lawson State, hitting .134 as a team. Anique Self collected a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, while Mariah Mayes came away with eight kills and eight digs. Ella Kyker led the team in kills for the second-straight match, recording 14, and Sophie Sanchez led the back line with 17 digs. Maggie Shorter anchored the offense with 25 assists, followed closely by Kameryn Browne with 21 assists.Â
Road Match on Tuesday
The Yotes are scheduled for a road conference match against Enterprise State (Ala.) on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 2, before traveling to Dothan, Ala. for another four-match tournament on Sept. 5-6. Tuesday's match against Enterprise State is set for 3:00 p.m. CT.Â
