Maya Griffin's Late Layup Lifts Yotes Past Bishop State on Homecoming

JACK ROBERTSON ARENA | BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Coastal Alabama - South Women's Basketball delivered a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback to claim its first ACCC victory of the season on Homecoming night at Jack Robertson Arena, as Maya Griffin's layup with two seconds remaining lifted the Coyotes past conference rival Bishop State, 58-57.

Trailing entering the final period, Coastal - South tightened up defensively and methodically chipped away at the deficit. With the 'Yotes trailing by one in the closing seconds, Maya Griffin drove the lane and finished through contact for the go-ahead bucket, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and sealing the dramatic win.

The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the 'Yotes, improving the ACCC record to 1-3 this season. Additionally, the overall record moves to 13-5.

The Highlights

The 'Yotes shot 40% (18-of-45) from the floor and converted 17-of-25 free throws (68%) in the one-point victory, outscoring the Wildcats 18-11 in the final quarter. Coastal was strong in the paint, finishing with 46 total rebounds, including 14 on the offensive end, while adding five blocks and seven steals defensively.

Shamiya Oliver powered the effort with 15 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, including six offensive boards, while adding three blocks and two steals. Tyra Caves contributed 11 points, two assists and two steals, and Maya Griffin finished with seven points, highlighted by the game-winning layup.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn Phillips added five points and six rebounds, and Kalaysia Robinson pulled down eight rebounds to go along with four points. Off the bench, Shakira Williams provided seven points on 3-of-5 shooting, including a three-pointer, while Cniya Mullen chipped in four points and three rebounds.

After the final whistle, one of the largest crowds inside Jack Robertson Arena this season celebrated the impressive comeback, making the Homecoming celebration in Bay Minette even sweeter.

The Coyotes return to the road for ACCC play, scheduled to face Wallace State - Hanceville next on Thursday, Jan. 29 in Hanceville, Ala. Coastal - South will look to win back-to-back ACCC games for the first time this season. Thursday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
