Coyotes Drop to 15-9 Overall, 2-7 in ACCC Division I Play

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama - South Women's Basketball team battled until the final buzzer but came up just short in a 68-63 road loss to Lawson State Community College (Ala.) on Monday night, Feb. 16 in Birmingham. With the loss, the Coyotes fall to 15-9 overall on the season and 2-7 in ACCC Division I play.

How It Happened

Coastal - South stayed within striking distance throughout the night in a tightly contested conference matchup. The Coyotes trailed by just two at the halftime break (36-34), while grabbing a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 54-53. However, the Cougars outscored the 'Yotes 15-9 across the final frame and secured the five-point victory.

Brooklyn Phillips led the way offensively for Coastal, pouring in 16 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting from the floor while adding a double-double with 11 rebounds. Shakira Williams also flirted with a double-double performance, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds while going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

Kalaysia Robinson dominated on the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with six points, while Cniya Mullen provided a spark off the bench with nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Shamiya Oliver added six points and seven rebounds in reserve action.

As a team, the Coyotes shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the field and 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from three-point range. Coastal - South was strong on the boards with a 52 rebounding effort, including 16 offensive rebounds that created second-chance opportunities. However, 20 turnovers and a 61.9 percent (13-of-21) mark at the free-throw line proved costly in the narrow defeat.

ACCC Division I play continues later this week, with the Coyotes aiming to bounce back and strengthen their conference standing.

The 'Yotes return home to Jack Robertson Arena in Bay Minette on Thursday, Feb. 19, hosting Calhoun Community College (Ala.) for a 5:30 p.m. CT matchup. Thursday's game will be aired lived on JockJive.com.
