Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader with Southern Union

Coyotes Bounce Back in Game Two to Force Monday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Baseball team split a home doubleheader against Southern Union (Ala.) on Monday, March 17, dropping game one 3-2 while winning the second game, 4-2. Coastal South and Southern Union met just three days ago in Wadley, Ala., with the Coyotes sweeping the Bison in the road doubleheader. 

Overall, Coastal South improved to 11-13 overall on the year, while the ACCC record improves to 7-1. The game one loss on Monday became the first conference loss of the season for the Coyotes.

Inside the Box Score

Monday's first game eventually went down as a heartbreaker for the Coastal South as the Coyotes left both the tying run and winning run on base in the final inning. Coastal South opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a single run, but allowed the Bison to take a 2-1 lead following the fourth. The Coyotes then tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, while Southern Union pushed across the go-ahead run in the seventh and final inning. From there, Southern Union escaped a late rally as the Coyotes left two runs at both second and third base to end the game. 

Aaron Threat led the offense with two hits in the loss, scoring both runs in the process. Catcher Dylan Lindsey worked a 1-for-2 line at the plate, adding a walk and one RBI, while three other Coyotes collected a hit in the first game. Coastal South out-hit Southern Union 6-3 in the game one defeat, with Spencer Nicholas tossing a complete game on the mound. Nicholas finished with three hits allowed, four walks, and two earned runs.

In the second game, Coastal South bounced back with a 4-2 win, using a big eighth inning to secure the victory. The first five innings went scoreless between the two conference foes, with the Coyotes hitting the scoreboard first in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, Southern Union grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth in an attempt to sweep the Coyotes on Monday. Coastal South then responded in the bottom half of the eighth, pushing across three runs to take a 4-2 lead. From there, the Coastal South pitching staff worked a scoreless ninth to secure the game two win.

Garrett Milbourne tossed 7 2/3 innings on the mound, only allowing six hits, one earned run, and three walks. He struck out four batters. Trevor Ferris earned the win with an inning of work from out of the bullpen, with Tyler Zawacki picking up the save. Offensively, Derek Jelen led the way with a 3-for-5 performance, picking up one RBI, while Aaron Threat finished 2-for-3. Devon Murphy came away with two big RBIs in a 1-for-5 line at the dish.

Across Monday's action, Coastal South out-hit Southern Union 16-11 during the split.

What's Ahead

Coastal South's next games on the schedule come on the road as the Coyotes face Northwest Shoals (Ala.) on Thursday, March 20. Thursday is a scheduled doubleheader and is set to start at 1:00 p.m. CT.
