Box Score 2 MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Baseball team was victorious in two ACCC road games on Thursday, March 20, sweeping Northwest Shoals (Ala.) in an afternoon doubleheader. The Coyotes took game one 7-6, surviving a late comeback by the Patriots in the process, while winning 7-3 in game two.
Coastal South moves back to .500 on the year at 13-13 following Thursday's wins, while the conference record improves to 9-1. The two teams are set to meet again this upcoming weekend in Bay Minette, Ala.
Doubleheader Highlights
Across game one, the Coyotes out-hit the Patriots 9-8, using a big fifth inning to secure the win. Coastal South was trailing 5-2 after four innings, but the five-run top of the fifth gave the Coyotes the 7-5 edge despite Northwest Shoals adding a run in the seventh and final inning.
Caden Mason had a big game at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the victory. Meanwhile, both Devon Murphy and Bryce Speakman collected two hits each in game one, with Speakman picking up an RBI and scoring two runs. Aaron Threat joined Speakman with two runs scored, stealing a pair of bases and adding a 1-for-3 showing with an RBI and a walk.
On the mound, Dexter Benoit earned the win with six innings of work, allowing six hits and five runs. However, due to errors on the defensive side, only one of the five runs scored went down as an earned run on Benoit. He struck out four. Tyler Zawacki came into the ballgame in the seventh and earned the save.Â
In game two, Coastal South again out-hit Northwest Shoals, this time by an 11-5 deficit. Northwest Shoals hit the scoreboard first with a single run, but the Coyotes responded with four runs across the third and fourth frames. Coastal South then added two more runs in the seventh before scoring two big insurance runs in the ninth to put the game away.
Aaron Threat finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Dylan Lindsey managed a 1-for-4 batting line with a pair of runs driven in. Seth Payne scored two runs after finishing 2-for-4 at the dish, while Derek Jelen went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.Â
Bryson Morman earned the win with six innings of work, allowing five hits, three runs, and four walks. He struck out six Patriots. Talen Tourelle picked up the save with three hitless innings from out of the bullpen, allowing just one walk and striking out three.Â
Back Home Saturday
Northwest Shoals comes to Bay Minette, Ala. on Saturday afternoon to face the Coyotes in a doubleheader for the second time in three days, scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT on March 22. Coastal South will look to stay atop the current ACCC D-I Baseball standings over the weekend.
