BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Coastal Alabama South Baseball hosted Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) for an afternoon conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 27, eventually splitting the DH after bouncing back with a game two win. The Coyotes fell 11-4 in game one to the Pirates, but managed a 7-6 win in the second game to secure the split. Coastal South stays at .500 on the year at 15-15 following Thursday's results, while the ACCC record moves to 11-3.
Thursday Highlights
Chatt Valley doubled the amount of hits the Coyotes recorded in game one, totaling 11 runs off 10 hits in the seven-inning win. Coastal South only tallied five hits and scored four runs across the day's first game, with all four runs being scored in the fourth inning. Kennedy Leggett came up clutch with a grand slam to put the Yotes on the scoreboard in the fourth. At the time, Leggett's grand slam gave Coastal South a 4-3 edge before the Pirates added eight runs over the next three innings.
Leggett finished 1-for-3 at the plate, while Dexter Benoit got the nod on the mound and threw five innings. Benoit struck out just batters and allowed six runs off eight hits.
In game two, the Coyotes opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, later scoring three more runs across the third and fourth frames. After four innings, Coastal South led Chatt Valley 6-2, but allowed the Pirates to work a comeback in the back half of the game.
Chatt Valley eventually tied the game 6-6 in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs across the sixth, seventh, and eighth. However, the Coyotes took advantage from a passed ball by the Chatt Valley catcher and scored the go-ahead run. From there, the Coastal South 'pen worked a scoreless ninth to grab the win.
Joseph Stephens led the Coyotes with three hits in the game two victory, followed by Silas Cunningham who notched a pair of hits. Cunningham led the team with three RBIs, while Bryce Speakman collected two RBIs and two walks. On the bump, Bryson Morman pitched eight innings as the game two starter, allowing 10 hits, six runs, and recording five strikeouts. Morman went down as the winning pitcher.
Coyotes Head to Phenix City
Coastal South and Chatt Valley are scheduled to meet for an additional doubleheader next on the scheduled, set for Saturday, March 29 at 12:00 p.m. CT. Saturday's DH will be played in Phenix City, Ala.
