Baseball Drops Two Games to Shelton State on Saturday; Falls from Top Spot in Conference Standings

Coyotes Drop Series 3-1 to Bucs of Shelton State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Baseball team came up short in a pair of home games against Shelton State C.C. (Ala.) over the weekend on April 12, dropping a weekend long four-game set with the Bucs, 3-1. The Coyotes fell 3-2 in game one before dropping the nightcap 10-6 on Saturday.

Coastal South's overall record falls to 21-19 overall and 16-8 in the ACCC. The Yotes now sit in second place in the current ACCC D-I Baseball standings following Saturday's results.

The Basics

In game one, the Coyotes lost a heartbreaker as Shelton State pushed across the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh and final inning. Both teams managed two runs each in the third, but a late RBI single by the Bucs gave Shelton State the 3-2 win.

Coastal South only managed three hits in the game one defeat, with Devon Murphy, Joseph Stephens, and Aaron Threat recording base-hits. Threat's hit was the lone extra-base hit in the game for the Coyotes, being a double in the third. On the mound, Spencer Nicholas was charged with the loss after pitching 6 1/3 innings. Nicholas gave up three hits and three runs, while striking out eight batters. 

In game two, Coastal South fell 10-6 after Shelton State once again broke a tie in the final inning. With the game nodded up 6-6 after the Coyotes recorded a two-run eighth to tie the Bucs, Shelton State pushed across four runs in the ninth to eventually earn the series win and the sweep on Saturday. Both teams recorded 12 hits in game two.

Seth Payne led the offense with three hits in the game two loss, while Joseph Stephens led the Yotes with two RBIs. Both Aaron Threat and Bryce Speakman recorded two hits each from the middle of the lineup. On the mound, Garrett Milbourn tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs. Trevor Ferris was hit with the loss on the bump after allowing the four runs to score in the ninth inning.

On the Road to Boaz

The Coyotes hit the road to Boaz, Ala. for the next games on the schedule, coming on Thursday, April 16 against Snead State C.C. (Ala.). Thursday's doubleheader is set to start at 2:00 p.m. CT.
