JACK ROBERTSON ARENA | BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Coastal Alabama - South Women's Basketball came up short at home in conference play on Monday night, Jan. 19, falling to Lawson State (Ala.) 60-57 after the Cougars used free throws in the final minute to grab the lead and steal the win. With the loss, the Coyotes have suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season, seeing the overall record fall to 12-4. Additionally, the 'Yotes open ACCC action 0-2 following two close contests.
The Highlights
Coastal - South fought throughout the contest but were unable to generate enough consistent offense, shooting just 32.7% from the field in the loss. The 'Yotes did their work at the free-throw line, converting 20-of-24 attempts, and controlled the glass with a 51-29 rebounding advantage. However, Lawson State came through with late free throws to seal the victory.
In the loss, Shamiya Oliver led the way with a double-double, finishing with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with seven offensive boards. Brooklyn Phillips added eight points and 11 rebounds, while Kalaysia Robinson chipped in eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Reigning ACCC D-I Women's Basketball Player of the Week Tyra Caves scored nine points, and Laila Young provided a spark from the reserves with seven points, two blocks, and a steal. Despite strong rebounding efforts and defensive activity, including five blocks and six steals as a team, turnovers and cold shooting proved costly for Coastal - South.
Traveling North to Decatur
Coastal Alabama - South Women's Basketball will look to regroup quickly as conference play continues later this week, aiming to get back on track with a road matchup at Calhoun Community College (Ala.) on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. CT. Thursday's game against the Warhawks will be played in Decatur, Ala.
