Game One Highlights
Southern Union hit the scoreboard first in Friday's first game, scoring a single run in the bottom of the first inning. However, Coastal South did damage in the top of the third, scoring three runs to grab the lead. From there, the Coyotes held off a late rally in the bottom of the sixth and went on to upset the Bison 3-2 to begin Friday's action.Â
Coastal South out-hit Southern Union 8-7, with the three runs in the third being the difference maker. Gracie Toledano finished 2-for-3 in the win with an RBI, while Taylor Hunt finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Despite going 0-for-3 at the dish, Breleigh Corley collected an important RBI in the victory. Meanwhile, Lauren Mounce pitched a complete game from the pitcher's circle, allowing just the two runs and seven hits. Mounce walked a pair and collected five strikeouts in the winning performance.
Game Two Highlights
Coastal South did not have much to show in the nightcap on Friday, suffering an 8-0 shutout in six innings. The Coyotes were out-hit 9-3 in game two, with Sydni Carpenter, Charlotte Lottinger, and Breleigh Corley each collecting a hit in the defeat for Coastal South.Â
Sam Daniels was awarded the start and pitched four innings from the rubber for the Coyotes, giving up seven runs. However, only two runs were earned against Daniels as three errors came back to haunt Coastal South in Friday's second game. Southern Union managed to score two runs in the first, while putting the game away with a five-run fifth inning. Later, the Bison added the dagger with the game-ending run in bottom of the sixth.
Coach's Reaction
Head Coach Mallory Radwitch, who just surpassed 400 career wins last week, was overall pleased with her team's performance on Friday. "I was really proud of our performance today in game one," Radwitch said. Radwitch felt her team battled in game two, but things just did not go the Coyotes' way in the end. "We were in the game in game two," she said. "Had some good cuts on the ball, but let one bad inning dictate the remainder of the game." The bad inning being the fourth where the Bison pushed across five runs, with errors helping the cause. "They have a very talented pitcher and some big bats, so they capitalized on those errors," Radwitch said.
Round Two with Southern Union
Coastal South and Southern Union will meet again next on the schedule, with the doubleheader being scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT on Monday, March 17. Monday's DH will be played at the Coastal South Softball Field in Bay Minette, Ala.
