Box Score 2 BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Just three days after the Coastal Alabama Softball Softball team split a road doubleheader with No. 24 Southern Union (Ala.), the Coyotes were back in action against the Bison at home on Monday afternoon, March 17, eventually falling in both games of a doubleheader.
The Coyotes dropped a heartbreaking game to begin Monday's action, losing 12-10 in nine innings after taking a 10-6 lead entering the seventh inning. In game two, the Bison rode momentum from the game one comeback and earned a 10-7 win to sweep Coastal South.
Coastal South is now 3-5 in the ACCC, while the overall record drops to 18-13 on the season.
Inside the Box Scores
In game one, the Coyotes fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but grabbed the lead in the third after scoring five runs. One inning later, the Coyotes added two more runs, while adding three runs in the sixth frame. Entering the final inning, Coastal South took a 10-6 lead only to allow four Southern Union runs to score in the seventh. The Bison forced extra innings, eventually pushing across two runs in the ninth to steal the win.
Taylor Hunt finished 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs, while Sydni Carpenter managed a 2-for-4 line at the dish with a homer, walk and two runs driven in. Kailin Parker joined Carpenter with a home run in the loss, while Payson Hanson collected a two-run hit late in the game as a pinch hitter. On the rubber, Caroline Johnson was hit with the loss after tossing 6 2/3 innings from out of the bullpen, being charged with seven earned runs. Starter Lauren Mounce only managed 2 1/3 innings in game one, giving up six hits and four earned runs.Â
In the second game on Monday, Southern Union once again scored three runs in the top of the first. This time, however, the Bison managed to keep the lead over the Coyotes. The put-away inning came in the top of the fifth where Southern Union scored five runs. Coastal South responded with a four-run fifth, but the deficit was too great in the end. The Bison out-hit Coastal South in game two, 15-7.
Gracie Toledano led the Coyotes with two RBIs in the game two defeat, finishing 1-for-2 at the plate. Payson Hanson was the only Coyote to record multiple hits in the second game, notching a 2-for-4 line with a run scored. In the pitcher's circle, Sam Daniels was awarded the start and managed 4 1/3 innings, allowing 13 hits and nine earned runs. Anna Griggs checked in late, holding the Bison scoreless with just two hits in 2 2/3 innings from out of the bullpen.
Across Monday's doubleheader, Southern Union outscored Coastal South 22-17, while racking up 32 hits.Â
What's Next
The Coyotes are back in action on Tuesday afternoon, March 18 with a non-conference game against College of Lake County (Ill.). Tuesday's action is just a single game and is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.
