Box Score 2 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Coastal Alabama South Softball secured two hard-fought road wins on Saturday afternoon, April 12, defeating Shelton State C.C. (Ala) to win the weekend series 3-1 over the Bucs. The pair of wins earns the Coyotes a 30-win season, with the overall record improving to 30-16 on the year and 12-8 in the ACCC.
How It Happened
Across game one, Coastal South out-hit Shelton State 9-6 in a 3-2 win in extra innings. The Yotes hit the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning with a single run, but allowed the Bucs to push across two runs in the sixth to trail 2-1 in the final inning. In the top of the seventh, Coastal South tied the game 2-2 following an Abbie Davis RBI fielder's choice, forcing extra innings.Â
In extras, the Coyotes took the lead in the top of the 10th inning after Charlotte Lottinger worked a bases-loaded walk. From there, the pitching staff for Coastal South kept the Bucs off the scoreboard and the Yotes earned the one-run win.
Sydni Carpenter, Taylor Hunt, and Grace Langston all finished with two hits a piece in the game one victory, while Charlotte Lottinger recorded two walks. From the pitcher's circle Anna Griggs was awarded the start and managed 6 2/3 innings from the rubber. Griggs allowed just three hits and two runs, while striking out five batters. Sam Daniels then finished out the game from the circle to earn the win. She also allowed just three hits, giving up zero runs and picking up two strikeouts.Â
In game two, the Coyotes and Bucs once again put in a close game, with Coastal South securing a 4-2 victory. The Yotes scored two runs in the third to grab an early 2-0 lead before going up 4-0 in the top of the sixth. Shelton State began a rally with two-runs in the bottom half of the sixth, but the pitching staff once again held firm for Coastal South. The Coyotes finished out game two out-hitting the Bucs, 7-5.
Gabby Miller managed a pair of RBIs in a 1-for-3 effort at the plate, recording a triple for her lone hit. Kailin Parker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Taylor Hunt managed a team-high three hits, also recording a triple and an RBI. From the pitcher's circle, Lauren Mounce tossed 5 1/3 innings as the game two starter, allowing two runs and striking out seven. Mounce was awarded the win, while Sam Daniels earned the save with her second scoreless outing of the day after finishing the final 1 2/3 innings.Â
"I was very proud of the girls' focus today through 17 innings," said Coastal South Softball Head Coach Mallory Radwitch. "Our starting pitchers did a great job and [Sam] Daniels came in in relief in both games and gave us a chance to win." Radwitch also commended her defense and the offense for scoring runs when the team needed. "Our defense played really well and we scored runs when we needed to."Â
Coastal Alabama South Softball has now won 10 for the last 12 games dating back to March 22.Â
What's Next
The Coyotes are set to start a four-game series with Snead State C.C. (Ala.) next on the schedule, with the first two games being played in Bay Minette, Ala. on Thursday, April 16. Thursday's action is a scheduled doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 p.m. CT.
