Box Score 4 BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama South Softball team came up short in four games played against No. 10 Wallace State - Hanceville from April 24-26, with the series beginning in Hanceville, Ala. on Thursday the 24th and concluding in Bay Minette, Ala. on Saturday the 26th.
Following the four losses, Coastal South's conference record falls back to .500 on the year at 14-14, while the overall record drops to 32-22 this season.
Series Recap
In game one to begin the weekend four-game set, Coastal South came up short by just one run, losing to the Lions, 4-3. Wallace State scored four runs in the first inning to open the game, with the Coyotes answering with three runs the next inning. From there, the remainder of the game went scoreless. Coastal South out-hit the Lions 8-7 despite the loss.
Eight Coyotes recorded one hit each in the game one loss, with Taylor Hunt collecting all three RBIs off a bases-clearing double in the second inning. Hunt added a walk to her performance, being the lone walk of the game for Coastal South. From the pitcher's circle, starter Lauren Mounce only threw the first inning, tossing 41 pitches and allowing the four runs to score. Caylee Johnson checked in from out of the bullpen in the second and finished the game with a scoreless outing, allowing just three hits and collecting three strikeouts.
In game two on Thursday, the Coyotes fell 4-2 to finish the doubleheader in Hanceville 0-2. Coastal South grabbed an early lead with a run in the second inning, but allowed Wallace State to take the lead following a two-run fourth. The Coyotes then tied the game in the top of the sixth following an error on the Lions' defense, but Wallace State responded with two additional runs next half inning to seal the victory.
Gabby Miller and Brianna Ryan both finished with two hits each in the loss, while Abbie Davis recorded the Coyotes' lone RBI. Coastal South was out-hit 9-7 in the nightcap. Anna Griggs was awarded the start from the rubber, finishing with 5 2/3 innings of work, allowing four runs off nine hits.
Two days later, the two teams met again in Bay Minette, Ala., with Wallace State opening the day with a 7-0 shutout over the Coyotes. The Lions scored all seven runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, while Coastal South was only able to record three hits in the shutout defeat.
Taylor Hunt, Brianna Ryan, and Abbie Davis recorded the Coyotes' three hits in game one on Saturday, while starter Sam Daniels finished with 3 1/3 innings from the circle. Daniels allowed just one unearned run and gave up three hits. Caylee Johnson relieved Daniels in the fourth, allowing six runs off four hits and two walks, followed by Gracie Toledano who finished out the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
In the series finale, the Coyotes fell 4-1 to the Lions. Coastal South managed an early 1-0 lead entering the fourth inning, but the Lions scored all four of their runs across the next three frames. Wallace State out-hit Coastal South 7-6 in game two on Saturday.
Abbie Davis led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while four other Coyotes finished with one hit a piece. Anna Griggs was awarded the start and tossed 4 1/3 innings before being relieved. Griggs allowed five hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out three batters. Coastal South's defense committed three errors in the loss, with two of the four runs scored being charged as earned runs.
Schedule Change Ahead
Coastal South Softball announced a schedule change for the regular season finale against Gadsden State (Ala.) as all four games of the series will now be played in Bay Minette, Ala. from April 30 - May 1. Wednesday's doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m. CT, while Thursday's final two games of the regular season will start at 12:00 p.m. CT. All four games will be broadcasted live on the JockJive Sports YouTube channel.
