DECATUR, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama - South Baseball team continued its mid-season surge in dominant fashion over the weekend, sweeping a four-game ACCC home-and-home series against Calhoun Community College (Ala.). With the four wins, the Coyotes improve to 13-20 overall and 5-11 in conference play, while extending their winning streak to five games.
Series Highlights
Coastal Alabama controlled the series from start to finish, outscoring Calhoun by a staggering 54-9 margin across the four contests.
The series opened at home in Bay Minette, Ala. on Mar. 26Â with a strong all-around performance in a 6-1 victory. The Coyotes scored two runs across the first three innings to set the tone early and leaned on solid pitching to keep Calhoun in check, allowing just one run while doing enough offensively to secure the win.
Aiden Hughes and Kennedy Leggett picked up a pair of RBIs each in the series opener, with Leggett tallying his fifth home run of the season. Meanwhile, Derek Jelen led the 'Yotes with two hits, finishing 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI and run scored. On the mound, Seth Payne picked up the victory with five no-hit innings, striking out six and walking just two batters. Mytch Deacy and Chris Floyd closed out the game with scoreless outings. Floyd struck out four in 1.1 innings.Â
Game two saw the offense heat up more, as Coastal Alabama pulled away for an 11-2 win, ending the game early in the eighth inning. The Coyotes totaled 14 hits in the nightcap at home, capitalizing on timely hitting and another strong showing on the mound.
Aiden Hughes went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the game two victory, recording a triple in the big performance. Kennedy Leggett picked up two more hits and an RBI, while walking twice, and Tyler DelVecchio and Bryson Womble each finished 2-for-5 with runs scored. Spencer Nicholas tossed five innings as the game two starter for the 'Yotes, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out five. Meanwhile, Coleman Capaci picked up the save with three no-hit innings out of the bullpen, recording three strikeouts.Â
The momentum carried into the road portion of the series two days later in Decatur, Ala., where Coastal Alabama erupted offensively. In game three, the Coyotes delivered their most dominant performance of the weekend, cruising to a 21-2 run-rule victory in five innings. The lineup produced runs in bunches, overwhelming Calhoun early and never letting up.
Seth Payne drove in five runs with a 3-for-4 line at the plate, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. To add, Payne scored four runs himself. Newcomer Carson Carrera also went 3-for-4, scoring three runs and picking up three RBIs. Other contributors included Aiden Hughes, Kennedy Leggett, Derek Jelen, Tyler DelVecchio, and Noah Eady, who all notched a pair of RBIs each in the blowout. Meanwhile on the rubber, Grant Breaux and Paxton Stallings combined for five innings of work, with Stallings closing out three hitless innings to shut down the Warhawks.Â
Coastal completed the sweep in game four with another run-rule win, 16-4 in five innings. Once again, the Coyotes' bats stayed hot, while the pitching staff limited Calhoun's opportunities to mount any resistance. Seth Payne put together another strong offensive performance, finishing 1-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Across the doubleheader in Decatur, Payne tallied eight RBIs to more than double his season total of now 15 on the year. Kennedy Leggett's strong series continued with three more RBIs, and Carson Carrera added three more runs driven in, giving him six on the day. On the bump, Coastal - South used four pitchers in the series finale, with Chris Floyd and Trevor Ferris tossing the final two frames and combining for five strikeouts. Ferris struck out three of the four batters he faced.
Across the four games, Coastal - South showcased a strong attack, combining explosive offense with consistent pitching and defense. The Coyotes scored double-digit runs in three of the four contests and allowed more than two runs just once. Now riding a five-game winning streak, the Coyotes will look to carry this momentum into the final month of conference play as they continue their push in the ACCC standings.
