BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Coastal Alabama - South Softball faced a tough test on Thursday afternoon, Apr. 9, dropping both games of a conference doubleheader to No. 1 Northeast Alabama Community College at home. The visiting Mustangs, who improved to 37-1 overall and a perfect 18-0 in conference play, showed why they hold the top spot nationally, securing an 8-0 victory in game one before completing the sweep with an 11-2 win in game two.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes of Coastal Alabama - South continue to hold a strong position in conference play with a 9-5 ACCC record and an overall mark of 22-13 following the two losses.
How It Happened
In the opener, Northeast Alabama set the tone early with a three-run first inning, sending nine batters to the plate in the process. The Mustangs maintained control throughout, limiting the Coyotes offensively to just five hits while steadily building an advantage. Coastal struggled to generate momentum at the plate, as Northeast Alabama put the game out of reach in the final frame with four add-on runs.
Sydni Carpenter led Coastal - South with a pair of singles, while Ava Gradick also recorded two knocks. Coastal's batters face a tough arm from Northeast Alabama in Addie Edwards, who put together a complete-game shutout, striking out 10 Coyotes. For Coastal - South, Jacey Reed pitched well from out of the bullpen after entering in the first inning, finishing with 6.1 innings of work. Reed allowed just one Northeast Alabama run in the game until the seventh where the Mustangs managed the four insurance runs.
Game two saw a similar trajectory, with Northeast Alabama again jumping out to an early lead and applying consistent pressure offensively. Despite the deficit, the Coyotes showed resilience in their final at-bat, pushing across two runs with two outs on the board in the closing inning to avoid back-to-back shutouts.
Kaeden Enzor finished 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in the game two loss, while Sydni Carpenter collected the other RBI in the loss for Coastal. The offense only mustered six hits in the nightcap, while the pitching duo of Sam Daniels and Mackenzie Boullon combined to allow nine earned runs on 12 hits.Â
Rematch Ahead
The Coyotes will look to bounce back against No. 1 Northeast Alabama on Saturday, Apr. 11, with the 'Yotes being scheduled for an additional doubleheader against the Mustangs in Rainsville, Ala. at 12:00 p.m. CT.
